The foundation for your offshore success

The use of environmentally friendly sources of energy is growing in importance worldwide. At the same time, the exploitation of these resources is a key growth market. The associated technological challenges are huge, however, particularly with regard to offshore applications. It is here, at offshore facilities far from shipping routes and harbors, where wind power offers its greatest potential.

Through the installation of offshore foundations, HOCHTIEF Construction Civil Engineering and Marine Works has laid the basis for the creation of state-of-the-art wind parks far from the coast.

Trend-setting: Lillgrund and alpha ventus

The Lillgrund wind park with its 48 turbines was installed in the Öresund, seven kilometers from Malmö off the Swedish coast. A particular challenge in this project was the laying of a heavy foundation that we undertook along with a partner. It involved transporting 1,400 tons of prefabricated concrete elements on pontoons into the Öresund and using a special crane to place them onto a ballast bed that we had prepared for this purpose

A project located on the high seas near Borkum is already a step further. After we had completed the investigation of the sea floor in the test field, we and our two partners received a contract for constructing a transformer station for the future alpha ventus wind park. The offshore station comprises two sections and will be anchored at a water depth of more than 30 meters. It will form a central element of the future alpha ventus wind farm which enables the wind power generated offshore to be transported to land. We will place the entire structure on the sea bed with the help of our jack-up platform Odin which we already used years ago to provide the basis for safe underwater foundations. 45 meters high, the approximately 65-ton jacket floats the three topside decks on the waves.
